Le Cerf Gris is a restored Maison de Maitre at the edge of Moux, a village in the Corbieres wine region of the Languedoc in south west France.
Everything in the house is on a large scale, with high ceilings and marble fireplaces in most rooms. Upstairs there are six bedrooms and three bathrooms (one ensuite). Downstairs there is one bedroom (with ensuite bathroom), a comfortable book-filled sittingroom, an office and a downstairs loo, as well as the big (45'x20') open-plan kitchen/diningroom/livingroom. The bathrooms & kitchen feature our own handpainted tiles, and there are many examples of our mosaic designs both inside and out.
The kitchen has lots of worktop space,a dishwasher and a serious cooker, with a large table by the windows for informal meals, or chatting to the cook. The other side of the room has a dining table for up to 16, and sofas by the raised fireplace. Double doors open to the west-facing terrace, overlooking the pool - a favourite spot for aperitifs.
It's an imposing house with a formal front garden featuring statues and a fountain. Two sets of steps lead up to the front door, which opens to a long wood-panelled hall.
The little woodland (home to red squirrels, nightingales and hoopoes) provides shade on the lawn by the pool. The pool and garden are not overlooked by anyone else.
The house is an ideal gite or holiday house rental for up to 12 people: painting or mosaic groups who need a large studio - or walkers & cyclists wanting a comfortable base - or families and friends looking for a relaxing and friendly holiday base in the sun.
NEWS!
We have recently extended and improved the kitchen-garden, with double-digging and raised-tile surrounds. It is getting close to a permaculture, deep-bed system, with drop-by-drop irrigation gravity-fed from an original bassin or cistern, from the well and from mains water. We hope to provide at least half of our vegetables from here - the rest is bought in season from local growers at the market.
This is an important development for us and is part of our efforts to be organic and sustainable. We have started a blog to give more space to this aspect of ArtHoliday and we welcome your comments, suggestions and links.
